In order to increase the sense of fraternity among the organizations and people who play an effective role in protecting the environment and rivers in different parts of the country and to include field-level recommendations in the formulation of future action plans, Dhoritri Rokhhay Amra (DHORA) and Waterkeepers Bangladesh jointly organized a three-day workshop on “The Importance of Environmental Protection in Sustainable Development” from January 16, 2024 to January 18, 2024 at Ratargul, Sylhet. The opening ceremony of the workshop was held at 3:30 PM on the 16th in the field adjacent to Ratargul village (Majher Ghat Road) of Fatehpur Union of Gowainghat Upazila in Sylhet where President of the Advisory Committee of DHORA Sultana Kamal was present as the chief guest and inaugurated the ceremony. It was presided over by the Vice-chancellor of Metropolitan University Dr. Mohammad Zahirul Haque.

Sultana Kamal, said, “We have a moral responsibility to protect the earth as conscious citizen. We must work together to protect the environment so that this world survives not only for us but also for the future generations to live healthily and safe”.

The keynote speaker, the Member Secretary of DHORA and Coordinator of Waterkeepers Bangladesh Sharif Jamil said in his speech “Any effort to protect the environment will remain incomplete unless the local community is involved with it. All the participants in this three-day workshop are local social leaders in certain environmentally sensitive areas. Together, we will strategize on how to engage people more in protecting the environment”.

Before the ceremony, the guests visited the Shrine of Hazrat Shah Jalal (Rah.) and the Matin Uddin Ahmed Museum. As part of the inaugural program, a newsreel exhibition on Ratargul forest and a discussion session on the “Importance of Environmental Protection in Sustainable Development” were held. The three-day workshop program included thematic discussions, group discussions, cultural programs, and visits to important sites. This strategic workshop has been organized to enhance organizers’ efficiency in environmental protection.
